All three Chiefs signed on responding right after, followed moments later by E-167 and T-2. Approximately five minutes after the initial dispatch, New York State Police gave an update stating that flames were through the roof. Car 2451 immediately called for a first alarm response, bringing in mutual aid tankers and manpower from Croton Falls, Goldens Bridge, Pound Ridge, Vista, Bedford Hills and Ridgefield CT. As Car 2451 (A. Llewellyn) arrived on scene to assume command, he was notified by police that all occupants were out of the building. A size up was given, and 1st Assistant Chief I. Llewellyn assumed operations. There was fire through the roof on the "A" side of the building with heavy fire out of the rear "C" side. Smoke was already showing running the entire ridge line of the building. As E-167 and T-2 arrived on scene, two lines were pulled to a mudroom door on the "A" side of the building in order to try and protect the remaining two thirds of the building. As the first crew in made entry, they were met by heavy smoke and clutter at the top of the stairs. Due to an inability to advance, it was quickly decided to pull out and attempt entry through the front door. In the process, one firefighter became caught up in debris and fell down the stairs, but was unhurt. As a line was pulled into the front door, firefighters were able to advance up a spiral staircase, only to be met with heavy fire and a compromised floor. As they pulled out, firefighters again attempted to reenter the first door, this time able to make their way to the second floor, which was an open space bedroom, and attack the fire. A second line was brought up while another backup line was pulled, but while conditions were not changing on the inside, they were rapidly deteriorating overhead. By this time, the fire had started to run the open attic space and was advancing overhead. The decision was made to pull all firefighters out of the building as fire had broke through the roof of the middle portion of the house. Multiple hand lines were put into use from the exterior in an attempt to stop the progression of the fire. Two portable pumps were put into use in the rear of the house, drawing water from the lake. A water source was established in a stream between the lakes, but during exterior operations, that became insufficient due to the volume of water being used. It was then decided that Bedford Hills' Tower Ladder would be brought up to the scene to be used for its aerial master stream. In order to do this, water supply operations had to be suspended in order to move apparatus out of the way and then back the tower ladder down the road. Once the tower ladder was in place, water supply operations resumed, this time by laying a mile and a half of supply line to the dry hydrant located on Osceleta Rdoad and using relay engines in order to provide enough water for the master stream. Firefighters remained on scene dumping water on the house until approximately 9:00 PM. By then it was decided that the majority of the fire had been knocked down and it was unsafe to enter or walk on the structure and the best course of action was to start packing up, as hose was starting to freeze. Firefighters would then return later, to extinguish any hot spots. Once the apparatus had been put back together in quarters, firefighters returned to the scene to attempt to put out hot spots. Unfortunately, due to ice and the condition of the building, many spots were inaccessible and an excavator was called in at 1:00 AM to assist. The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team determined that the fire started in a stack-able washer/dryer located on the second floor. Fire traveled up the dryer vent which vented into the attic. It was determined that prior to arrival, there was already fire throughout the entire attic of the house. The South Salem Fire Department would like to extend our appreciation to all responding departments for their assistance as well as Tom Gossett and Pat Donatan for supplying the excavator in the middle of the night. Car 2452, Rescue 21 and Engine 167 were on the initial response and upon arrival observed two heavily damaged vehicles. Fortunately each vehicle was occupied by only a driver and both had managed to exit their vehicles prior to fire department arrival. Utility 79 and Engine 168 were requested to close the roadway on both sides of the accident scene. The roadway was closed for an extended period of time due to the location of the vehicles and necessary roadway cleanup. One driver was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital by Lewisboro VAC, the other driver refused medical attention at the scene. Fri, 06 Jan 2012 11:58:49 GMT http://www.southsalemfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=170 Early Morning Smoke Condition http://www.southsalemfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=169 On Sunday, December 11th, South Salem firefighters woke to a call for a house filling with smoke and the residents evacuating. Chief A. Llewellyn arrived first on scene and found the three occupants out of the home and observed a growing smoke condition in the house. After a quick size up, it was determined that there was a small fire burning in one of the kitchen drawers. The drawer was removed and the fire was extinguished outside of the house. Firefighters then checked for any extension and ventilated the house. It was determined that the cause of the fire was an oven mitt that had been left too close to the stove and was returned to the drawer, without the homeowner realizing it was beginning to burn. Sat, 31 Dec 2011 20:58:23 GMT http://www.southsalemfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=169 Christmas Tree Safety http://www.southsalemfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=168 From the US Fire Administration: Decorating homes and businesses is a long-standing tradition around the holiday season. Unfortunately, these same decorations may increase your chances of fire. Based on data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), an estimated 250 home fires involving Christmas trees and another 170 home fires involving holiday lights and other decorative lighting occur each year. Together, these fires resulted in 21 deaths and 43 injuries. Following a few simple fire safety tips can keep electric lights, candles, and the ever popular Christmas tree from creating a tragedy. Learn how to prevent a fire and what to do in case a fire starts in your home. Make sure all exits are accessible and not blocked by decorations or trees. Help ensure that you have a fire safe holiday season. What's a traditional Christmas morning scene without a beautifully decorated tree? If your household includes a natural tree in its festivities, take to heart the sales person's suggestion – "Keep the tree watered." Christmas trees account for hundreds of fires annually. Typically, shorts in electrical lights or open flames from candles, lighters or matches start tree fires. Well-watered trees are not a problem. A dry and neglected tree can be. Selecting a Tree for the Holidays Needles on fresh trees should be green and hard to pull back from the branches, and the needles should not break if the tree has been freshly cut. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. Old trees can be identified by bouncing the tree trunk on the ground. If many needles fall off, the tree has been cut too long and, has probably dried out, and is a fire hazard. Caring for Your Tree Do not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks. Be careful not to drop or flick cigarette ashes near a tree. Do not put your live tree up too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks. Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times. Disposing of Your Tree Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood-burning stove. When the tree becomes dry, discard it promptly. The best way to dispose of your tree is by taking it to a recycling center or having it hauled away by a community pick-up service. Holiday Lights Maintain Your Holiday Lights Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up. Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory. Do Not Overload Electrical Outlets Do not link more than three light strands, unless the directions indicate it is safe. Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Make sure to periodically check the wires – they should not be warm to the touch. Do not leave holiday lights on unattended! Holiday Decorations Use Only Nonflammable Decorations All decorations should be nonflammable or flame-retardant and placed away from heat vents. If you are using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant. Don't Block Exits Ensure that trees and other holiday decorations do not block an exit way. In the event of a fire, time is of the essence. A blocked entry/exit way puts you and your family at risk. Never Put Wrapping Paper in the Fireplace Wrapping paper in the fireplace can result in a very large fire, throwing off dangerous sparks and embers that may result in a chimney fire. http://www.usfa.fema.gov/citizens/focus/holiday.shtm http://youtu.be/ZLHhG65fLeY Tue, 13 Dec 2011 16:27:39 GMT http://www.southsalemfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=168 Training at South Salem - Overturned Car with Entrapment http://www.southsalemfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=167 South Salem firefighters were faced with a challenging drill on Monday night, November 21st. In the rear of the firehouse, Chief A. Llewellyn and 2nd Asst. Chief Scott set up an accident scene which involved an SUV on its side, partially submerged in water, with an occupant trapped (the always willing to help out rescue dummy). The drill was conducted in real time, with 1st Asst. Chief I. Llewellyn as the IC and Capt. Yorke as Operations. Their initial size up was a SUV rollover, with a single occupant in the vehicle with his arm pinned underneath. As R-21 and E-167 arrived, crews went to work stabilizing the vehicle and formulating a plan for extrication. It was determined that the quickest and safest way to remove the victim was to remove part of the roof of the vehicle between the A and B pillars. This would help maintain the structural integrity of the vehicle and prevent it from possibly shifting. Once the section of roof was removed, the vehicle needed to be lifted in order to free the victim's arm. Air bags were utilized, but proved ineffective due to the lack of depth needed for them to safely lift once positioned. It was quickly determined that the spreaders would have to be utilized to lift the vehicle. Along with constant cribbing, the spreaders successfully lifted the vehicle the few inches needed to free the victim. Once the victim was placed on a back board and clear of the hot zone, the drill concluded and a debriefing was conducted. The overall time to extricate the victim came in at just under twenty five minutes. Chief A. Llewellyn, who observed the drill and took notes, lead the debriefing. Members discussed the challenges that they may face at any accident scene, as well as ever changing conditions and always having a backup plan. Wed, 09 Nov 2011 12:20:59 GMT http://www.southsalemfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=166 Change Your Clock Change Your Battery http://www.southsalemfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=164 Daylight-saving time ends Sunday, November 6, and marks the 24th anniversary of the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® (CYCCYB) program, sponsored by Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, which reminds us to change and test the batteries in our smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. This message is simple and the habit can be lifesaving. The South Salem Fire Department reminds our residents that one easy step can help save their lives and the lives of those around them. Everyone is encouraged to use the extra hour they "gain" from daylight-saving time to change the batteries in their own smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, test the alarms and remind friends, family, neighbors and fellow community members to do the same. Communities nationwide witness tragic home fire deaths each year, but, everyone can work together to help reduce the number of home fire fatalities. Non-working smoke alarms rob residents of the protective benefits home fire safety devices were designed to provide. The most commonly cited cause of non-working smoke alarms: worn or missing batteries. "Eighty percent of child fire fatalities occur in homes without working smoke alarms. It's a tragic statistic that could be reduced by adopting the simple habit of the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery program," says Chief Andrew Llewellyn. Changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year, testing those alarms and reminding others to do the same are some of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce these tragic deaths and injuries. Additionally, the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends that smoke alarms in homes should be replaced every 10 years and having both ionization and photo electric smoke alarms are best to alert people to all types of home fires. All three chiefs signed on and were updated by 60 Control that callers were stating it was in the area of the Thistlewaithe Learning Center (former Hayloft Motel). Car 2451 arrived on location and quickly notified 60 Control of a three vehicle MVA involving a school bus, a person trapped in one of the vehicles, and requested South Salem be retoned and called for additional ambulances from Vista. (As there was a delay in 60 Control being notified of the accident, the school had already sent another bus to the scene and off loaded the children onto it.) Due to the location of the vehicles in the roadway, Car 2451 sent R-21 around Route 35 on Spring Street in order to access the one vehicle that was in the woods with one pinned. E-167 proceeded directly on Route 35 into the scene. Once R-21 arrived on scene, firefighters went to work stabilizing the vehicle and then quickly popped the door. They then assisted LVAC and WEMS packaging the patient and loading him into Vista's Ambulance. In total, three people were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries and 44 children were transported by bus to Northern Westchester Hospital for evaluation due to their age. Route 35 was closed for approximately one hour while South Salem operated. Crews went to work stabilizing vehicles, assisting the Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps with patient care and using the irons to pop open a door so that a patient could be removed. While this was happening, fire police shut down Route 35 at Bouton Road and at Mead Street. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries and South Salem cleared within an hour. Muster Title http://www.southsalemfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=149 On Sunday, May 22, 2011 the South Salem Fire Department competed in the 4th Annual J.I.M.M.Y. Muster held at Fireman's Field in Somers, NY. The muster involved teams from local volunteer fire departments as well as area Explorer Posts competing in firematic events such as tug-o-war, midnight alarm, bucket brigade, hose roll and a new event, arena pumping, which combines the midnight alarm with attaching and advancing hose lines to knock over a target. The South Salem team got off to a great start by achieving first place in the tug-o-war after beating Briarcliff Manor Fire Department in the finals. The team was able to continue its momentum by achieving first place in the hose roll competition along with first place in the bucket brigade. The team went for a clean sweep by winning first place in both the midnight alarm and arena pumping. The day's friendly competition culminated in South Salem winning "Best Overall" for the third straight year. The J.I.M.M.Y. Muster is a fundraising event benefiting the J.I.M.M.Y. (Just Imagine Making Miracles Yours) Fund which was founded in memory of James "Jimmyboy" Arena and raises money to help families in our area with children with life threatening disease and/or injuries. Upon arrival, South Salem firefighters quickly learned that all the occupants were out of the vehicle and firefighters began assisting Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps members with assessing one patient who had minor injuries. North Salem Road was shut down for approximately an hour while NYSEG assessed the possibility that the truck may have struck a utility pole guide wire and to allow Sal's Towing to recover the vehicle from the woods. Traffic was detoured by South Salem fire police onto Sullivan Road during the road closure. The accident investigation was handled by Lewisboro Town Police who reported that the incident was still under investigation. The single vehicle involved, traveled up Bouton Road, left the roadway striking a power company pole and continuing over it and into many trees on the side of the road. As Car 2451 arrived on scene, the two occupants of the vehicle were being assisted away from the vehicle by Lewisboro Police, a Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps (LVAC) member, and firefighters who were unable to report to the firehouse due to the roadway being blocked. Power wires were still live and suspended above the vehicle which were arching after the accident. The roadway was closed and all emergency personnel moved to a safe distance awaiting NYSEG. Both occupants refused medical attention and were released to their parents by police and Lewisboro VAC. South Salem firefighters cleared within two hours after the vehicle was removed and the scene turned over to NYSEG.
