Four Car Accident Shuts Down Rt. 35

On Wednesday morning, May 1st, South Salem firefighters were dispatched to Rt. 35 at Waccabuc River Lane for a multi-vehicle car accident. First arriving units found 4 cars involved with all occupants out of the vehicles. A quick assessment determined that two of the people involved had minor neck and back injuries.
South Salem firefighters secured the vehicles and assisted Lewisboro VAC with patient care and packaging. Firefighters also closed down Rt. 35 between Mead St. and Bouton Rd. in an effort to allow all the first responder to operate in a safe environment and provide a quicker removal of the vehicles.

As of April 13th, the South Salem Fire Department officially kicked off the departments 75th year of service. Celebrations began the night prior with the members taking some time to enjoy each others company at the annual inspection dinner, that had a 75th Anniversary twist. Held at the Waccabuc Country Club Carriage House, the departments specially formed 75th Anniversary Committee put much effort into putting on a great dinner for nearly 150 people including department members and guests, neighboring department guests, other county wide emergency service officials, as well as town officials. A focal point of the evening was of course the awards handed out, which were as follows;

Top 5 Responders:
1 - Mike Wetzel
2 - Mike Lombardi
3 - Keith Bauer
4 - Ed Zeller
5 - Steven Creedon

Junior Firefighter of the Year:
Gabe Frolick

Firefighters of the Year:
Nick DeLaurentis and Mike Davison

Inspection winner:
Engine Co. 1 (E167)

The department hopes the community members of the Town of Lewisboro will keep up to date with the celebratory year, especially the annual carnival and parade, as well as other department events. Many thanks to all the effort and help of everyone involved in making it such a special evening. A great night was had by all, as a great beginning to this milestone for the department.

Members Applaud Fellow Member in Act of Heroism

His name was being kept quiet, but now the members of the department would like to thank Firefighter Billy Gossett in his recent local act of heroism. Last week as he was driving through the neighboring town of Katonah, Gossett noticed some peculiar activity and stopped to do something about it. As can be read in the following local publications, Gossett got himself involved in an abduction of a woman, helping to fight off the abductor and keep the woman safe, along with the assistance of another man.

Local authorities are calling Gossett a hero, helping to possibly save this woman's life, certainly being responsible for her safety and well being. The department is very proud of their brother firefighter, and happy to have Gossett as another selfless member of the South Salem Fire Department that acted in a time of need, when needed most. Well done Billy, and thank you.

Wall Breach Training

The members of the Department are always looking to further their education by learning new and different techniques. This was seen at the most recent weekly Monday night drill where members practiced a very important method of escape called wall breaching. Wall breaching is a technique used when the way you entered a space is no longer accessible and there is no other way out. By breaking through the wall and maneuvering yourself through wall studs you can make another way out. Even though there may be narrow spaces in the wall, knowing proper techniques can allow any size person, including gear, to fit through. Thanks to Lieutenants Nick DeLaurentis and Mike Davison for converting an old work bench into a safe and practical wall breach simulator that was well used by members.

Crew 62 Lends a Hand to Breezy Point

After entering through the NYPD security check point, getting your daily assignment, getting your tools and supplies ready, and passing by the many National Guard Humvees, you find yourself traveling around what could be mistaken for a war zone. But then you realize you're only an hour and a half from home, in Breezy Point, NY, where Super Storm Sandy struck.

On Sunday, January 6th, members of Venture Crew 62 met bright and early at the South Salem Firehouse, loaded up the car, and headed out to Breezy. When you go to enter the town, and you're stopped by a security check point at the gate, reality hits you. Through Hand 2 Hand Northern Westchester, a Sandy Relief organization based out of Cross River, NY, the Crew was linked up with Habitat for Humanity of Westchester. The Crew met their guide for the day at a local church which was turned into Habitat's local disaster relief satellite office. The Crew got their first assignment and headed off to the Point Breezy Fire Station, the closest firehouse to where the infamous fire of 100 plus homes took place.

The PBFD Fire Chief said parts of their firehouse became submerged in water early on in the storm. This led to the loss of a lot of materials and supplies and then their apparatus became out of service. The Venture Crew worked in a room that had mold growing on the wood paneling and insulation and had to take it down to the studs so the fire department could start to rebuild again. The Chief spoke more about the storm, trying to explain the unimaginable feeling of being at a firehouse so close to such a large fire, and not being able to do much about it. He also mentioned the numerous other calls that night, as well as another large fire that didn't get reported on. As firefighters themselves, the crew members and advisors were taken back. Noticing their current apparatus, the crew members learned that all their apparatus was donated from across the country, since their personal apparatus was lost in the storm. After finishing their talk with the very grateful chief and his members, the Crew left the PBFD with a feeling of accomplishment and pride in helping out their fellow brother firefighters.

Before heading to their second assignment, the Crew was lead through the area of over 100 homes that were burned down. With their heads bowed down in disbelief, the members walked through not being able to imagine what these families have gone through. They noticed the little things, like what survived the inferno such as a rack of CD's that was untouched, in front of a house that was taken down to a charred foundation. They noticed the little bikes that were mangled into balls of rusted metal, the melted vinyl and plastic fences, the kids toys that they knew were just as important to the children that lived there, as the houses were to the families that lived in them. All the while, keeping in mind the big picture; that this area and these families would never be the same. With a new sense of just how fortunate they were to have not lost a thing except maybe a few trees or power for a few days, the Crew headed off to their next assignment.

Down the road was an elderly man's house, that had a foundation caved in and wet sand covering the whole floor of his finished basement. Some parts were two feet deep of sand. Although he had his older sons to help, he needed the extra hands to get the sand out soon so he could start rebuilding his foundation before more damage occurred. The Crew spent the rest of the day there clearing out the sand, the cinderblocks that fell in, and even seashells and other debris brought in by the ocean right outside his front door. By 3:00pm the floor was almost clean, the foundation uncovered, and a fresh start was possible for this man, which he didn't think would come anytime soon.

After a long day of working and lending a hand wherever possible, the Crew packed up and headed back home. As they drove away, and all day while working, there was a definite sense of hope, optimism, and pride for this little community. Outside the PBFD was a sign that read "It's 5 o'clock somewhere…rebuild breezy". A testament to the community's determination that no matter what time of day it is, or what the current state of the area is, there are better times ahead, and Breezy will come back. And after a day of volunteering, the members of Crew 62 felt the same way, and are humbled to have been a miniscule part of that mantra.

Many thanks to Hand 2 Hand Northern Westchester, Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, Crew 62 members Gabe Frolick, Stephen Muoio, Ted Laquidara, Matt Jones, and Advisor John Riina, for making this great experience happen. If you have the opportunity to lend a hand, don't pass up on it. The area is improving, but it will be a long time before it's back together again in full.

Fire Chief Adds Police Officer to his Resume

The Department would like to congratulate their very own Chief, Andrew Llewellyn, in recently graduating from the Westchester County Police Academy. Back in August, it was made official Andrew would be one of the newest Lewisboro full time cops, specifically, the new Katonah-Lewisboro District School Resource Officer. He passed the necessary tests and entered the academy over the summer. Since then, he has spent every weekday, all day, at the police academy, training physically and mentally, and then physically some more. Five months later, he was a part of the 134th class who walked across the stage at SUNY Purchase in a graduation ceremony done to the nines. The December 14th ceremony included the County Executive, County District Attorney, Director of Public Services, his instructors, among other county officials and guest speakers. He received his certificate from Lewisboro Police Chief Frank Secret as well as his brother, New York State Trooper and 1st Assistant Chief of the SSFD, Ian Llewellyn, with his family and friends in the audience. From here, he continues his training in the field, and is planning to start in the schools in February.

The members of the SSFD have noticed the time, hard work, perseverance and commitment it took of their Chief to receive this new title, and they all stand together to proudly congratulate Fire Chief and Police Officer Andrew Llewellyn!

Tanker Goes Mutual Aid to Brewster Fire

On, Wednesday, December 19th, South Salem was requested mutual aid to Brewster for a structure fire. Tanker 2, Goldens Bridge Tanker 1, along with Croton Falls, responded over the county line to Brewster to a fully involved structure fire at an abandoned building, in the area of the Brewster Ice Arena.

Tanker 2 responded and provided water at the dump site, while South Salem personnel assisted Brewster FD at the structure. First arriving firefighters had the difficult task of stretching hose line approximately 100 yards through years of overgrowth and pricker bushes.

The cause of the fire was deemed intentional and one person was arrested at the scene. For more reporting, please visit:

Many thanks to the Town of Lewisboro for your generosity in giving to the Toys for Tots collection this year. Between the Goldens Bridge, South Salem, and Vista Fire Departments, an estimated 400 plus toys were donated Saturday. The Toys for Tots representatives were overwhelmed upon arrival with the amount of gifts collected. Special thanks to Lt. Mike Peck of Vista for leading the combined effort in making sure that many more kids have a present to open Christmas morning. Everyone looks forwarded to another great collection next year.

On Thursday, July 5th, South Salem firefighters visited the Lewisboro Day Camp Little Explorers, to show the campers their apparatus along with demonstrating the importance of fire prevention and safety. Campers had the chance to climb in apparatus and see some of the equipment firefighters use including the ever important Jaws of Life. Firefighters also taught campers about the importance of dialing 911 in an emergency, the need for campers and their families to develop and practice a home fire escape plan and the proper technique to "stop, drop and roll." By the expressions on their faces, the over 150 campers enjoyed this much anticipated visit and the firefighters as well enjoyed this annual trip to the day camp.

Four Members Graduate Firefighter II

The South Salem Fire Department is proud to have four graduates from a recent Firefighter II course. LT M. Davison, FF S. Creedon, FF T. Caviola, and FF M. Harris took the class together, and had a great experience. The course consisted of some classroom learning at the Katonah Training Division and some hands on training at the Westchester County Fire Training Center in Valhalla. With Firefighter I being a pre-requisite, the four students expanded their skills and knowledge from that class by learning more about specific tools and skills while also learning to be a better leader and communicator on a scene.
The SSFD always encourages members to keep up to date with training and to bring what they learn back with them to their co-workers at the fire house, so the department can always improve and better serve their community. Congratulations and thank you to these members.

Venturing Crew 62 Remembers 9/11

Members of the South Salem Fire Department's Venturing Crew met bright and early on a recent Saturday morning to head into the city to see the 9/11 Memorial, ten years after the attacks. On the way down the group talked about where they were when the events occurred, and although most were only in kindergarten, they all had vivid memories and talked about what the attacks meant to them. An adult advisor on the trip, Captain Matt Yorke, told them how their own department responded to the events that took place.

Once the Crew ventured through the city blocks, they met up with Lake Carmel Fire Department's Explorer Post, who generously invited us as their guests for the tour of the memorial. Once inside the gates, it was a sight to be seen. One member said it was different than seeing it through the television screen, and not what he expected. As the group walked around the reflecting pools with all the names engraved, they came across the name Jeffery John Giordano, one of South Salem Fire Department's own, and a member of the FDNY Ladder Company 3. It was a great moment for the young, upcoming Members in the Department to witness.

After the tour the groups had lunch together and headed back home, humbled by their experience that afternoon. Many thanks to Lake Carmel's Explorer Post for inviting the Crew along!
