On Sunday, December 11th, South Salem firefighters woke to a call for a house filling with smoke and the residents evacuating. Chief A. Llewellyn arrived first on scene and found the three occupants out of the home and observed a growing smoke condition in the house. After a quick size up, it was determined that there was a small fire burning in one of the kitchen drawers. The drawer was removed and the fire was extinguished outside of the house.

Firefighters then checked for any extension and ventilated the house. It was determined that the cause of the fire was an oven mitt that had been left too close to the stove and was returned to the drawer, without the homeowner realizing it was beginning to burn.
