Venturing Crew 62 Remembers 9/11
By Firefighter Mike Harris
March 24, 2012
Members of the South Salem Fire Department's Venturing Crew met bright and early on a recent Saturday morning to head into the city to see the 9/11 Memorial, ten years after the attacks. On the way down the group talked about where they were when the events occurred, and although most were only in kindergarten, they all had vivid memories and talked about what the attacks meant to them. An adult advisor on the trip, Captain Matt Yorke, told them how their own department responded to the events that took place.
Once the Crew ventured through the city blocks, they met up with Lake Carmel Fire Department's Explorer Post, who generously invited us as their guests for the tour of the memorial. Once inside the gates, it was a sight to be seen. One member said it was different than seeing it through the television screen, and not what he expected. As the group walked around the reflecting pools with all the names engraved, they came across the name Jeffery John Giordano, one of South Salem Fire Department's own, and a member of the FDNY Ladder Company 3. It was a great moment for the young, upcoming Members in the Department to witness.
After the tour the groups had lunch together and headed back home, humbled by their experience that afternoon. Many thanks to Lake Carmel's Explorer Post for inviting the Crew along!
