Jr. Member Drill
By Captain Avery Scott
April 20, 2008
On Thursday, April 17th, the Junior Members of the South Salem Fire Department met for their monthly drill. This month's drill focused on pumping and hose streams. At the beginning of the drill the junior members went over E-167 to keep familiarizing themselves with the location of tools and equipment. After that, some of the officers and senior members gave them a brief overview of the different hose and nozzles that the engine carries, as well as their different uses.
Engine 167 was then pulled outside where the Jr. Members practice pulling and flaking out the cross-lays. The lines were charged and they practiced advancing the lines and knocking down cones. The Jr. Members were able to experience the pressure of the hose and how difficult it can be to move a charged line. They also learned that you need good communication and teamwork when trying to advance a charged line.
Every month on the third Thursday we hold a Jr. /New Member drill.
These drills are to give our young and new members more individual training aside from our weekly department drill. Anyone interested in joining the department is welcome to come.
