Explosion on Cove Road

On Saturday evening, January 4th, South Salem and Vista were dual dispatched for a reported explosion in a bathroom of a home. Car 2452 arrived on scene and reported a 2-story wood frame house with nothing showing and requested EMS for injuries sustained by the homeowner. Car 2451 arrived moments later and assumed command. Further investigation revealed a heavy smoke condition on the first floor, the bathroom door blown off its hinges and a small fire in the bathroom. The fire was knocked down quickly by firefighters with an extinguisher, while E-167 arrived on scene and stretched a line to the front door. Crews then checked the rest of the house using the thermal imaging camera and determined that there was no extension fire.

Investigation revealed the explosion originated under the bathroom sink, however the Westchester County Cause and Origin Team was requested to assist in determining the cause of the explosion. Further investigation found that aerosol products exposed to heat from a hair dryer caused the explosion resulting in a fire. Cause determined to be accidental.

South Salem operated on scene for approximately two hours.
