House Struck by Lightning
By Captain Avery Scott
July 24, 2008
On Wednesday, July 23rd at 11:35pm, the South Salem Fire Department was alerted to a possible structure fire at #5E Carriage House Rd. Car 2451 responded first followed by Engine 167 and Tanker 2. Car 2451 arrived on scene and reported a house struck by lightning with a light smoke condition. During size up, Chief Posadas noticed two holes in the side of the house, as well as some siding that was blown off. The homeowner also stated that the cover of a propane wall heater had blown across a room.
The first arriving crew was directed to the attic to investigate. Their progress was hampered by a very tight space as well as a false ceiling. Thermal imaging cameras were then used to check behind the walls, while another crew outside removed the siding in the area of the burn marks. After it was determined that there was no fire, the house was ventilated and crews began packing up.
South Salem members were clear in under an hour.
