Ridgefield and state fire marshal's offices are concentrating their investigations on the garage area of a 9,000-square-foot house that burned to the ground Monday,
No one was injured, but two family dogs died in the blaze.
The fire is not believed to be of suspicious origin, Fire Chief Heather Burford said last night.
Around 10:45 a.m., "a contracted employee working at a nearby neighbor's home called 911 reporting a house fire with heavy fire showing from the garage," Chief Burford said.
When firefighters arrived, they found half the building engulfed in flame.
None of the five occupants — two adults and three teenagers — were at the house at the time. All were located and brought to the scene.
Sources said the house was owned by John and Lorraine Brice.
"Firefighters attempted an interior fire attack but were quickly driven back by a massive amount of heat and fire," Chief Burford said. "A defensive attack was established to protect a nearby structure as a water supply was created with nine water tankers."
More than 130,000 gallons of water was used.
Gusts of up to 20 mph hampered efforts to knock down the blaze, she said.
The house had an alarm system, but no sprinkler system.
About 60 firefighters from Ridgefield and surrounding towns fought the blaze.
More coverage will appear in this week's Press.
