Broken Pipes Cause Flooded Basement
By Captain Avery Scott
January 22, 2009
Thursday evening, South Salem Firefighters were alerted to a water condition on Winterberry Circle in the Meadows. Engine 168 responded first and was updated by BHFD Car 2031 (who was in the area) that the townhouse unit appeared to be abandoned and the basement was quickly filling with water.
On arrival Engine 168 was met by 2031 and KFD Car 2211. The association manager advised the firefighters that the house is in foreclosure and has been unoccupied for about a month.
Entry was gained to the unit through a window and it was quickly discovered that there was approximately 5-6 feet of water in the basement and filling quickly. The water was coming from a broken pipe in the ceiling between the 1st and 2nd floors.
South Salem Firefighters set up two portable pumps and a sump pump and began pumping water out of the basement. Once representatives from the development's water company arrived and shut the water off, the basement began to drain quickly. South Salem Firefighters were on scene for approx. two and a half hours.
Thanks again for the assistance from BHFD 2031 and KFD 2211.
