By Lieutenant Avery Scott
March 25, 2008
At 10:11am, Monday, March 25, the South Salem Fire Department was alerted to a commercial alarm at John Jay High School, the second in as many days. E-167 responded, followed closely by Tanker 2.
Upon arrival, E-167 was directed by staff to the rear of the High School, to one of the new additions, "Q" building. The first in crew was approached by one of the building supervisors who stated that there was heavy smoke in the 2nd floor hallway. 60-Control was notifed and re-toned South Salem with the updated heavy smoke condition.
Lt. Scott, with FF Leigy went in to investigate and discovered heavy smoke coming from the boy's bathroom. After masking up, they entered to discover one of the stall partitions on fire as well as something burning on the floor. FF Leigy used the water can to quickly extinguish it.
After the fire was knocked down, the operation shifted to venting the building. Assisted by Bedford Hills Assistant Chief McGill, vent fans were set up to clear the smoke down the hallway. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation .
1st Assistant Chief Posadas cleared all units at approximately 11:20am.
